Instruments Commonly Used in Operation theatre
Surgical instruments in operation theatre vary according to the type of surgery. They are grouped into different specialties according to the surgeon’s need. Some of the commonly uses instruments in operation theatre are:
- Artery Forceps
They are 2 types of artery
Curved artery forceps (6 per set)
Straight artery forceps (6 per set)
Curved artery
surgical tools used to control bleeding by clamping and holding blood vessels so cauterization or ligation can be performed

Straight artery
Artery forceps are most common instruments in operation theatre used to grasp vessels, tissue, and sutures during surgical procedures. Press the artery and hold it out of the way, or clamp and seal blood vessels.

Allis forceps
The Allis clamp is a surgical instrument with sharp teeth, used to hold or grasp heavy tissue. Sizes are long, medium and short.
Sponge holder
Sponge Holder used for holding swabs when preparing a patient for surgery or used to grip and manipulate cervical tissue during gynaecological procedures

Needle holder
Used to hold a suturing needle during surgical procedures. There are 2 types of needle holder- long and small

Scissor
The scissor is used to cut thick tissues such as those found in the uterus, muscles, breast, and foot. Scissors used for dissection are placed in tissue with the tips closed.
There are 2 types of scissor : curved (2 per set) and straight (2 per set )
Cord clamp long artery
The clamp helps stop bleeding from the blood vessels in the umbilical cord.

A towel clamp is a surgical instrument which is used to secure towels and surgical draping during a medical procedure

A kidney tray is a shallow kidney shaped basin, widely used in surgical procedures for carrying dressing, bandages, small instruments, soiled dressing and other medical waste

Used for handling dense tissue, such as in skin closures. Also called locking forceps, these are ratcheted instruments used to hold tissue or objects, or provide hemostasis

Sims’ speculum is inserted into the vagina to retract posterior vaginal wall.

Vulsellum
Vulsellum forceps, these are used to grasp the cervical lips to visualise the cervix or during vaginal hysterectomy. They can also be used to grasp a fibroid polyp. They have a pelvic curve
Mosquito forceps
Mosquito Forceps are hemostatic forceps designed for controlling bleeding and handling blood vessels during surgery. There are 2 types: straight and curved
Babcocks forceps
They are frequently used with intestinal and laparotomy procedures. Babcock Forceps are similar to Allis forceps. However, they may be considered less traumatic due to their wider, rounded grasping surface.

Pad is broadly used to eliminate the bacterial attack during surgical process.
Bowl
Round lotion bowls helps to manage little amount of used sponges and gauze with saline or betadine for the procedure
Towel
Sterile drape used to cover the body while surgery is being performed
Gauze
Used as a medical dressing, gauze is generally made of cotton. It is especially useful for dressing wounds where other fabrics might stick to the burn or laceration
Apron
Aprons over gowns as an additional measure to provide protection from contamination of garments during aerosol generating procedures
